UCC has been Recognized by Five Ship Classification Societies to Perform Underwater Ship Husbandry

In the shipping industry, classification societies are non-governmental organizations or groups of professionals, ship surveyors and representatives of offices that promote the safety and protection of the environment of ships and offshore structures. Classification societies set technical rules, confirm that designs and calculations meet these rules, survey ships and structures during the process of construction and commissioning, and periodically survey vessels to ensure that they continue to meet the rules.

Underwater Ship Husbandry programs provide cost effective solutions when dry-docking is infeasible or impractical. Past experience has shown that underwater inspection, maintenance and repair can be performed at a level of quality equal to that of work performed in dry-dock. State of the art inspection techniques followed by a well-engineered repair plan help to ensure that this is accomplished. UCC is currently recognized by the American Bureau of Shipping, Lloyd’s Register of Shipping, Germanischer Lloyd, Bureau Veritas, and Det Norske Veritas.

The Net Tender was built by Anderson Boat Works, Inc. of Saugatuck Michigan in 2009 to the specifications of UCC’s boat committee and work scopes. It operates out of the Midwest Division servicing all inland lakes and rivers including the Great Lakes and also has offshore capabilities. The Net Tender measures 30 feet in length with a beam of 11 feet. Its main use assists the power generation industry to comply with the EPA 316B regulations. For over 20 years UCC’s experts have worked with fish barrier nets at power utilities across the U.S. Our divers have successfully completed all aspects of inspection, repair, installation and removal of barrier nets greatly reducing impingement and entrainment of aquatic species. The Net Tender can easily be trailered to distant work sites saving money on mobilization.

Being the global leader in radiological diving for more than 40 years, UCC has proudly attended the WM Symposium for the past ten years.Philip McDermott, UCC’s Director of Global Nuclear Services will be in attendance throughout the conference.

The annual Waste Management (WM) Conference, presented by WM Symposia (WMS), is widely regarded as the premier international conference for the management of radioactive material and related topics. WMS is a non-profit organization dedicated to education and opportunity in waste management. It was founded to provide a forum for discussing and seeking cost-effective and environmentally responsible solutions to the safe management and disposition of radioactive waste and radioactive materials.

The annual WM2010 conference attracted over 2,000 registrants from throughout the world and provided significant opportunities for networking, professional growth and education – as well as business opportunities. This conference was attended by decision makers, project managers, and technical and procurement specialists representing the government and private organizations undertaking the global tasks of radioactive material management, decommissioning and site remediation.

WM2011, the conference’s 37th year, is expected to attract representatives from over 35 countries, presenting more than 400 papers in over 80 technical sessions. WM2011 will be held February 27 – March 3, 2011 at the Phoenix Convention Center’s West Building. The published deadline for abstracts is August 13, 2010 and the Program Advisory Committee will review abstracts in Phoenix on September 13, 2010.

Sponsoring organizations include the American Nuclear Society (ANS), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development / Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD/NEA). The conference is also organized in cooperation with the US DOE, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
