UCC Completes TVA Browns Ferry Project for Carbon – Free Energy Generation

Underwater Construction Corporation recently performed critical cooling discharge structure cleaning at the 3.8-gigawatt TVA Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant in Athens, AL, to keep this facility operating at maximum efficiency.

In a July 25, 2022, article in the TVA Browns Ferry Nuclear News, it was presented that, “As the summer of high heat and record-breaking electrical demand continues, the Browns Ferry team has risen to the challenge of generating the maximum amount of carbon-free energy from all three units while fulfilling the requirements of a state environmental permit to limit temperature levels in the Tennessee River.”

“This coordinated effort includes divers from vendor Underwater Construction Corp. (UCC) lancing vegetation and debris from the underwater diffuser pipes that return cooling water used in plant condensers to the river. This work has helped address a flooding issue on the cooling tower cold water channel, restoring the capacity to reduce the temperature of water before returning it to the river.”

“As a result, all three units were at 100 percent power late last week with only 1 degree increase in downstream river temperatures. Performance like this is important to generating the maximum amount of electricity while keeping downstream river temperatures below 90.4 degrees Fahrenheit. It also helps Browns Ferry avoid de-rating units to meet the thermal limits of the state environmental permit as was done two weeks ago.”
