Case Study: Zebra Mussel Removal & Silt Mitigation at Novelis

The Challenge

Novelis faced an urgent operational issue caused by invasive species and sediment buildup: a major blockage of its offshore intake structure and pump house wet well. Zebra mussels had completely clogged the intake riser pipe, restricting water flow essential to plant operations. Poor underwater visibility and extensive debris within the wet well made assessment and removal even more complex, demanding a targeted and environmentally responsible solution.

The Solution

Novelis Tunnel De-silting Silt-Clay Dewatering

Underwater Construction Corporation (UCC), led a large-scale zebra mussel removal and sediment mitigation project, combining diver expertise with specialized dredging and dewatering systems. Over 130 commercial dives were conducted to clear blockages manually, while Underwater Mineral Processing Services (UMPS), a division of UCC, established a shore-based sediment processing system using Geotube® dewatering and advanced water treatment.

Key Highlights:

  • Zebra mussel removal from the intake riser using diver-assisted hydraulic vacuum dredging.

  • Sediment and mussel transport through a 1,400-ft pipeline to onshore dewatering facilities.

  • Geotube® structures used to contain and dewater material safely.

  • Structural reinforcement to improve long-term system performance.

  • All treated water was returned to the environment in compliance with regulatory standards.

The Results

The combined efforts of UCC and UMPS restored full water flow to Novelis’ system and minimized future risk of zebra mussel-related disruptions.

  • 301.1 cubic yards of zebra mussels and sediment removed

    • 82 CY from offshore intake
    • 219.1 CY from the wet well
  • 1,300 feet offshore intake structure accessed

  • Intake system functionality restored with preventative reinforcements

  • Minimal environmental impact through closed-loop water treatment
