Connecticut-Based Contractor Honored for Underwater Resurfacing of a NASA Training Facility
SAN DIEGO: Connecticut-based Underwater Construction Corporation (UCC) has won two industry awards. The Essex company received first place in two categories:
- First place in the Industrial Construction category for the underwater resurfacing of NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL).
- The 2020 Contractor/Crew MVP of the Year Award for crew leader Tim Schuster.
In July 2020, CoatingsPro Magazine held a virtual awards ceremony to honor the top 2020 Contractors of the Year. The annual awards go to projects that have shown ”excellence in high-performance coatings.”
UCC’s Lead Project Manager for Large Area Underwater Coating Services, Tim Schuster, and the Quality Assurance Manager, Les Ayer, thanked the judges in a video link during this year’s Coatings Pro Contractors Award virtual ceremony.
The NASA NBL project took place at NASA’s Sonny Carter Training Facility at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. It is a 200-foot long, 100-foot wide pool that holds 6 million gallons of ozone-treated water. Since dewatering the pool is not an option, UCC completed the recoating entirely underwater.
The four-person crew applied 26,000 square feet of coating to the pool’s vertical walls without interference to ongoing astronaut training programs. The ability for the underwater coating project to be completed seamlessly without shutting down NASA operations was genuinely beneficial to the facility.
“UCC supports the mission of NASA and is proud that our specialized underwater coating personnel completed this project safely, on budget, and schedule for NASA. And we are equally grateful to Coatings Pro Magazine for the acknowledgment of our fine crew and Project Manager, Tim Schuster.” – Phil McDermott
